okay

current mood: okay

Dear refectory,

Pickled onions in the ragout - an interesting idea. Did you pick that one up from Masterchef?

I'll have you know that my father had to put his foot down very hard to stop them giving the staff frozen, defrosted peppers to put in the salads! It's not the Refectory you know, there's a complete tosser in charge.

Oh, I'm sure there's some logical reason why it's like that.

I wonder how Felixstowe is doing now that so many staff are using the Hewlett Packard staff canteen.

What, a tosser in charge? I believe it's a time honoured Refectory tradition!

When I was there we were the only place making a profit, we had the spreadsheets delievered every week which provided many a gloating opportunity.

Was that really on Masterchef though? I do love pickled onions.

I don't imagine so, I was being sarcastic. I didn't imagine anyone proper would think it was a good idea, although the Pudding Boy up there seems to think it might taste nice.

I thought you might be, but didn't want to assume. It could also have been my dad's idea actually: pickled onions tasting not unlike sauerkraut, which demonstrably goes with absolutely everything (if you have acquired the taste).

I can find out though!

Barry Norman recommends putting his pickled onions in stews. Is he wrong?

I do not like pickled onions. I don't know - maybe that's why I find the idea of putting them in things weird.

is that Barry Norman from Film 94?

Yes, he also makes pickled onions.

let me just check something. A ragout is a stew, isn't it? In which case, I would be happy to find a pickled onion in there. If a ragout is something made of tomatoes then it would be vile.

Yes. Here's where we need the Smash poet, although I think she might've given up livejournal in favour of Facebook.

PICKLED ONION RAGOUT

It's true a ragout
Is some type of stew
And maybe for you
Pickled onions would do
But for me they'd be hideously disgustingly vile
And so they were

Why are pickled things generally stinky and yukky (pickled eggs, pickled walnuts, pickled onions) but pickled gherkins aren't?

Actually pickling onions are rather nice in stews and casseroles. But that's not the same as pickled.

Is this the wrong moment to point out I make fabulous pickled onions.

Well, aside from the fact that's impossible, it seems like a reasonably legitimate tangent.
